Why people choose to divorce

On Behalf of | Aug 12, 2019 | Divorce |

In Illinois, spouses choose to divorce for many different reasons. While there might be some feelings of shame during the separation process, choosing to end a marriage can be a self-protective measure that should not be stigmatized.

According to a study that was reported in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy, newly divorced straight exes reported four main reasons why they chose to end their marriages. The researchers surveyed 2,731 people for their study and found that the No. 1 reason for divorce was because of a lack of intimacy or love.

Another 44% of the study participants cited communication problems as contributing to their divorces. The other common reasons listed by the survey participants included a lack of trust or respect and simply growing apart. When spouses choose to divorce because they are unhappy, their decision may be important for protecting their emotional and psychological well-being. Analysts say people should not feel that they must remain in unhappy marriages with people who do not provide them with the love and support that they need.

The decision to end a marriage is not an easy one to make. An unhappy spouse may want to talk to a family law attorney and a financial advisor before they file a petition for divorce. This can help a person understand the potential financial impacts that their divorce might have. Being prepared before filing for divorce might make the process a little easier. Legal counsel could look out for a client’s best interests throughout the process.
